Nothing heralds the arrival of summer in New Jersey quite like the appearance of sweet, juicy strawberries on our northern New Jersey farms. Strawberry picking on one of the Garden State’s many pick-your-own farms is an awesome way to enjoy a fun day outdoors with friends and family while picking up some locally-grown Jersey Fresh produce. Live in the city? There are a number of pick-your-own strawberry farms near New York City (some within an hour’s drive) in the surrounding North Jersey and Central Jersey suburbs. Things to know about strawberry picking season in New Jersey:

• The start of the season can vary depending on geographic area (strawberry picking season usually starts earlier in South Jersey than in North Jersey), varieties of berries, and local weather conditions and can range anywhere from mid-May to mid-June. Check the farm website and/or call to confirm that pick-your-own strawberries are available.
• Weather conditions can affect farm hours. Again, call the farm to confirm that the pick-your-own strawberry fields are open.
• It can get hot out in the strawberry fields and there is no shade. Bring water and wear sunscreen! A wide-brimmed hat is not a bad idea either.

Alstede Farms is open daily for strawberry picking beginning in late May (visit website or call the farm to verify beginning of the season and picking hours). Other things to do at this North Jersey farm include visiting and feeding the barnyard animals and enjoying homemade ice cream at the ice cream parlor. Wednesday through Sunday, Alstede Farms offers pony rides, the wagon train, a moon bounce, and the “corn kingdom”.

Strawberry picking is expected to begin in early to mid June (visit Sussex County Strawberry Farm’s website or call to verify beginning of the season and picking hours).. Sussex County Strawberry Farm also offers pick-your-own raspberries (late August) and pick-your-own pumpkins (October).

Strawberry picking is expected to begin in early June (visit Donaldson Farms’ website or call the farm to verify beginning of the season). Pick-your-own hours at this North Jersey farm are Monday through Saturday from 8am to 6pm and Sunday from 8am to 5pm. Other things to do at Donaldson Farms include farm tours, visiting the farm animals, rubber ducky races (weekends), pony rides (Friday nights and during special events), and special events such as the Strawberry Festival featuring live music, delicious strawberry-themed food and other tasty treats, and children’s activities!
