Cape May Zoo Offers Free Family Fun in South Jersey
Spring has sprung and I think we’re all anxious to spend some time outdoors after the long cold winter we’ve had here in New Jersey. A day at the zoo sounds just about perfect to me right about now. Want to spend a day at the zoo and not blow your budget? Don’t feel like driving into the city? There’s no need to drive into New York or Philadelphia – we have awesome zoos in New Jersey and some of them are even FREE! One of my favorites is the Cape May Zoo. This family-friendly zoo has been in operation since 1978 and, in my opinion, is one of the best day trip destinations in the southern New Jersey area.
Located within Cape May County Park, the Cape May Zoo is home to over 550 animals on 85 acres of well-maintained exhibits. The zoo is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), so you can rest assured that the resident animals are very well cared for. Lions, tigers, and bears? Yep – they’ve got those! They’ve also got camels, coati, and capybara. This New Jersey zoo is also home to classic “American” species, such as the bald eagle, American bison, white-tailed deer, and others. You’ll also find a large aviary here, filled with dozens of species of colorful, exotic birds.
Other attractions at the Cape May Zoo include a train ride, an animal-themed carousel, and a rock-climbing wall. There are also food concessions located in the zoo. No outside food is permitted in the Cape May Zoo (drinks may be carried in); however, if you wish to bring your own food you can simply picnic in the Cape May County Park picnic areas just outside of the zoo.
The Cape May County Zoo frequently holds special events and programs such as Knee-High Naturalists, an Easter EggstravaganZoo, a Night Out With the Critters, Boo at the Zoo (Halloween), and more. You can even reserve a county park pavilion for a Cape May Zoo birthday party!
The Cape May Zoo is located at 707 Route 9 North
in Cape May Court House, New Jersey within Cape May County Park. Admission to this New Jersey zoo is free. Summer hours are from 10am to 4:45 pm (summer hours begin with daylight savings time) and winter hours are from 9am to 3:45pm (winter hours begin on November 1st).
