On this date in New Jersey history, singing superstar Lesley Gore was born. Although born in Brooklyn, Lesley was raised in Tenafly, New Jersey and attended the Dwight School for Girls in nearby Englewood. She became famous when her song “It’s My Party” became a number one hit in 1963 (It was the first hit single for producer Quincy Jones). “It’s My Party” was followed up by other hits including “You Don’t Own Me”, “Judy’s Turn to Cry”, and “California Nights”.

Ms. Gore passed away after battling lung cancer earlier this year.
