2016 New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge Offers Rare Chance To Visit 11 Lighthouses In One Weekend
How many New Jersey lighthouses can you visit in one weekend? Hop in the car this weekend and find out while you take the annual New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge!
The Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey is a two-day opportunity to visit 11 New Jersey lighthouses, one museum, and two life-saving stations. This year’s challenge takes place on October 15th and 16th. Participants can tour the state and learn about the history of these majestic beacons and their importance in protecting ships and the New Jersey coastline, as well as help preserve these lighthouses by purchasing a Lighthouse Challenge of NJ souvenir puzzle booklet for just $2. Lighthouse Challenge participants can collect a puzzle piece at each stop along the challenge. Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered in a drawing for $1000 in prizes.
Lighthouses participating in the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ 2016 include Absecon, Barnegat, Cape May, East Point, Finn’s Point, Hereford Inlet, Navesink Twin Lights, Sandy Hook, Sea Girt, and Tinicum. The Barneget Light Museum, as well as lifesaving stations in Ocean City and Stone Harbor, will also be participating in the challenge this year. Nighttime lighthouse climbs are being offered at Absecon, Cape May, and Tucker’s Island.
The general hours for the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ 2016 are 8:00am – 6:00pm, although individual site hours may vary slightly. Most lighthouses are free to climb, although donations are appreciated. The challenge takes place rain or shine. Specific information regarding the Lighthouse Challenge (including maps and directions, hours, and fees) can be found at lhchallengenj.org.
