“Calliope Rose” mixes a dose of Greek Mythology with palace intrigue and the decline of our civilization. It’s “The Iliad” on laughing gas. It’s “The Odyssey” on acid. It’s “Spartacus” on crack. Yes, it’s a comedy. The story unfolds in the mythological Beacon Light Lighthouse. Here, “Calliope” Rose Walker tends the light as America’s last, lone keeper. In the age of GPS, Rose is a relic, but an agreement with the United States Government maintains that the Walker family mans the lighthouse, so long as a Walker remains. Rose tends the light alone, having lost her husband, Jason, as he defended Beacon against Oriental scallop boats in The Great Scallop War. Her needs are met once a week by a dinghy sent from shore, piloted by her daughter, a mercenary townie with her own designs to transform the crumbling light house into a lucrative, tourist trap. Only Rose stands in her way. Lately, people claim that in heavy weather, the light goes off. Captains claim an alluring voice urges them toward the light and to their destruction. With high profile cruise ships adding Beacon to their port o’ call, this critical mass brings Dexter Hacke, a young investigator from The Department of Transportation, to root out the cause.
